Who's sending Winter Solstice gifts to people? When the hell did that start?

People who don't celebrate Christmas I imagine. An excuse for giving gifts while not believing in Christmas

People have been giving gifts and having parties in celebration of the Solstice for centuries. "Christmas" was just a (successful) attempt by the Christians to take over Saturnalia, a sort of Solstice-oriented pagan Roman festival that consisted of wild partying, drinking, orgies, and ritual sacrifice. As a compromise, the Christians told the pagans they could be Christian and still celebrate Saturnalia, except they'd call it Christmas and say it was Jesus' birthday. The orgies and all that still went on for ages afterward. Over time, it morphed into what we think of as Christmas today. Christians don't have the market cornered on December 25 and whatever festivities may go along with it, including gift-giving. I don't believe in religion, but I have fun putting up the tree with my kids and giving presents! :)

Thank you, Megan. I once got into an argument on here about the subject and the person in question just could not get his head around it, calling me a liar for claiming the festival is older than Christianity.
