Those are emoticons. They're created using characters. :) would show a smiley face. ;) would be a wink.

Brian Joslyn Yeah the examples you typed are emoticons. The *pictures* shown in the post are just that, pictures, or Emojis to be exact. They aren't created with the standard Smileys that you used as examples, they aren't made with a combination of key strokes.... So my original statement stands: "picture typos."

And btw, if I'm wrong, tell me what keyboard combination creates a skull or a puppy. Thought so. Those are PICTURES you select from a list.

Your "combination of keystrokes" claim is nothing but characters typed. Even for "pictures," whether the characters to make them appear are shown anywhere or not. Thus, I remain correct. Same goes for some "pictures" in which one can select from when using Skype.

How do you add symbols to texts?

They're emoticons!

Guess I'm behind the times...I can only do smiles like this :)

Type those characters on chat programs like Skype when chatting with someone and a smiley will show. It may or may not show the same way when texting. For some you may have to pull up the emoticon menu.

I don't have an iphone with an emoticon menu. All I get are a bunch of different smileys.

It's there, somewhere. If you see a selection of smiley's to choose from then that's the menu.
