The exam was not a Pap smear.
If I was a parent, I wouldn’t ground a child for bombing on an exam! I feel that’s like teaching them it’s completely totally unacceptable to have small failures every now and then. Not everyone can be perfect.
But yeah, it would suck to get a vagina on your math exam.
Unless this exam is something like the AMC-8, a score of 42 closer to “pathetic” than “small failure”. (Though admittedly it’s a much smaller failure than getting a vagina on the exam, and I wonder how that autocorrect could have happened.)
If I had gotten a 42 in math, my mom and dad would have taken turns using me for batting practice. I never missed the honor roll.
Maybe the kid’s failing the class for some reason other than simply struggling to understand the material, like skipping or goofing off in class. I’m sure some parents are heartless enough to ground a kid just for not doing well in a subject, but if he was taking steps like getting tutoring or asking the teacher for help surely he wouldn’t have fallen that far behind.
THOSE PARENTS ARE TOO LENIENT THEY OUGHT TO STRING THE KID UP BY THEIR TOE NAILS IN THE TOWN SQUARE AND HAVE THE CITIZENS TAKE TURNS THROWING TOMATOES CABBAGES AND MOLOTOV COCKTAILS AT THEM UNTIL THEY UNDERSTAND HOW UNACCEPTABLE A 42 IS….

He didn’t fail just because of the exam. His final grade is 42 and he got a 40 on the exam. That class was already failed. Not that he has the math skills to figure that out.
